I won't lie, this is an unabashed tearjerker/heartstring puller - but it doesn't wallow in the melodrama of a Hallmark Special, or play out like a made-for-TV movie.

Based on a novel, the script isn't as simple as it appears, and this explores many dynamics of the father/son relasionship, the trials of growing older, the burden of taking care of your aging parents, and the desensitized way the health care system can treat the elderly.

... and Malcolm X was certainly controversial.

I was surprised by just how much I disliked him in his early years. He was a common crook, interested only in making a fast buck. It's hard to believe, watching the first third of the film, that this man will go on to be such a powerful orator.
