Baseball: A Film By Ken Burns
Award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns takes a swing at another unique and much-loved aspect of life in the United States: baseball. The sport's century-and-a-half history unfolds over nine nostalgic, informative "innings," chronicling not only baseball's signature people, places and events, but also the sport's deep-rooted -- some say it approaches spiritual -- relationship to American culture and society.

Obviously baseball fans would get more out of this documentary series than those who couldn't care less about the game, yet Burns nonetheless makes a compelling filmic argument here that the history of professional baseball can be held up as a mirror to the social evolution of America. All of the great struggles and historic firsts in baseball resonate outward into the struggles within America at large. As professional baseball struggles with labor conflicts, racial segregation and the rise of the modern media age, the viewer is left to ponder the wider implications of these events as social changes throughout America follow in parallel. The style is similar to that of Burns' documentary on the civil war. Voice-over narration accompanied by still photos from earlier periods provides much of the audio-video landscape and this is inter-cut with interviews with historians and writers chatting about their own personal relationship with the game. Long, but enjoyable, especially for fans of the game.home run - The_Jack
i'll begin by saying i love baseball, but i would hope even those that may not love it or evenunderstand the game, would take the time to view this series.
Ken burns makes a beautiful documentary, that doesn't feel like a documentary at all. A true piece of history is told thru the eyes of a game. His use of still photos to enhance the stories being told, truly captures a time and place in history.
