Black Adder: The Complete Collector's Set
One of the best comedy series ever to emerge from England, Black Adder traces the deeply cynical and self-serving lineage of various Edmund Blackadders from the muck of the Middle Ages to the frontline of World War I. In his pre-Bean triumph, British comic actor Rowan Atkinson played all five versions of Edmund, beginning with the villainous and cowardly Duke of Edinburgh, whose scheming mind and awful haircut seem to stand him in good stead to become the next Archbishop of Canterbury--a deadly occupation if ever there was one. Among tales of royal dethronings, Black Death, witch smellers (who root out spell makers with their noses), and ghosts, Edmund is a perennial survivor who never quite gets ahead in multiple episodes.

I've realized that I don't find it as funny as the first time around but the quick witty English humour never fails. Rowan's finest, certainly better than Mr. Bean but I've never been into slap stick so I find this more cerebral. I enjoy seeing the costumes and setting as well.Black Adder - rudy123
Series is a good historical spoof. Every episode has a laugh or two. The use of idiots and events is exceptional. Word plays and minor pranks are used throughout. Even Hugh Laurie adds some levity to numerous situations. Each season has interesting themes.Funny as funny should be - dahemac
Blackadder is British comedy at its best. The series gets loads of laughs from physical comedy that ranges from brilliantly understated to pant-dampening over-the-top. And yet while pratfalls and outrageous costumes are the cake of these programs, the lavish icing is sharp wit and dialogue, ever improving as the series progresses. Rowan Atkinson's Blackadder was a perfect vehicle for his style of comedy.
On top of this Blackadder is a chance to see many of Britain's great performers early in their careers. Beside Rowan Atkinson there are Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, and Miranda Richardson, to name a few, being brilliant (and young).
