Homicide: Life On The Street: Season 1 & Season 2
"Simply the best one hour on television." -The Wall Street Journal
One of the most critically acclaimed shows in TV history, Homicide: Life On The Street re-invigorated a tired genre by focusing on the grueling work of solving murders instead of an endless succession of bloody crimes and car chases.
Inspired by David Simon's Edgar Award-winning account of Baltimore homicide detectives and brought to television by director Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Oz) and writer Paul Attanasio (Gideon's Crossing), Homicide boasted a powerhouse cast featuring Ned Beatty (Deliverance), Yaphet Kotto (Alien), Richard Belzer (Law & Order: SVU), and breakout star Andre Braugher (Frequency). The critical response was overwhelming: Homicidewon multiple Emmy and Writer's Guild of America Awards and is one of just two shows in history to claim three Peabody Awards.

I never watched this series when it originally aired, so far in viewing the series, the first disc and this one were my favorites in terms of story line and the acting. Hands down this series is so much better than any of the TV crime series today. I appreciate the fact that these characters are not "slick" like the CSI shows, I quite often forget that I am watching a TV series, the acting is so good , I feel like I am viewing a movie at the cinema.Better than the average cop drama - chrissieb
"Homicide" is the only cop drama I could ever get into. Unlike the CSI's etc that are on tv today, this drama focuses on very un-glamorous cops in a very un-glamorous Baltimore. It seems to be the most realistic look at what goes on in a homicide department. Although they do focus on some over the top crimes from time to time, for the most part these over worked cops follow the daily murders that plague most big cities. Also, unlike other cop dramas, plots and crimes follow through into other episodes and sometimes season which allows the viewer to really get involved in the narratives. Homicide loses its credibility and some of its integrity I feel as the seasons progress, but the first 2 season are great tv.The Jury Is out - Sigridmac
I rented the first disc in this season and wasn't sure how I felt about it -- good humor, definitely gritty and realistic but there was something missing for me. It was a little disjointed and I didn't have enough feeling for the victims the way I do in Law and Order: Special Vics.
Having said that, I'm a *huge* fan of Tom Fantana's and watched every episode of Oz twice, so I'm going to continue with this and assume that it will improve.
