I heard this was a classic - but it didn't stand the test of time for me... - Scopitone
I had heard many good things about this movie. Being a fan of 80s fantasy (Labyrinth and Neverending Story) I thought this would be really good. But it just missed the mark for me. It took itself SO seriously it was kind of hard to watch it without laughing. Especially that little forest boy who looks like Malcolm in the Middle? Woah! Anyways, I just couldn't maintain interest in this. I guess that is the problem with rewatching movies you loved as a child that don't stand the test of time...A noble effort, but a failure, nonetheless. - estefan
Ridley Scott spends so much time in creating an impressively designed world, with some incredible set design, makeup effects and costume work, that he forgets an important element - a good story. Legend is nothing more than your typical good vs. evil adventure, except it's made worse by a cast of characters who aren't particularly enlightening and a messy screenplay full of cringe-worthy lines. It doesn't help that Tom Cruise and Mia Sara give embarrassingly wooden performances and though Tim Curry seems like the only person trying, he is barely in it enough to make an impression and his character is very under-written, that we don't get a true idea of his evilness. This is a noble effort, but it all comes off as a smoke-and-mirrors show with little substance. Before Pan's Labyrinth... - cathyottawa
...there was Legend. Now this is a dark fairy tale. I never thought that description fit Pan's Labyrinth, but it works perfectly here.
Just a bit too dark and scary for a young audience, this is a visually stunning film adults can enjoy in a childlike way. I'd liken it to Lord of the Rings in that regard.
It doesn't feel dated, with effects that stand up today and makeup that garnered an Oscar nomination. The only give away of it's age is the very 80s sounding musical score and soundtrack.
Other reviewers complain of the simplicity of the story line, but that's what fairy tales are; simple morality tales. This doesn't get bogged down in complicated plot, but just takes us on a darkly fun, childlike adventure.
Look for an unrecognizable Robert Picardo (the doctor on Star Trek Voyager) as the swamp hag Meg.
