Shackleton
The Greatest Survival Story Of All Time.
The 27 men who joined his expedition found that Ernest Shackleton was true to his word. They had drifted with the pack ice of the Weddell Sea for ten months, their ship - the Endurance - had sunk, and they were castaways in one of the most hostile environments on earth, hundreds of miles away from land. And so, with his dream of becoming the first man to cross Antarctica long abandoned, Shackleton set his mind to a far greater challenge: bringing his crew safely home.
Based on the detailed diaries and first-person accounts of expedition members, this special edition of Shackleton tells the true story of their extraordinary ordeal, and the death-defying 800-mile journey across the world's worst seas that made their rescue possible. Written and directed by Charles Sturridge (Longitude, Brideshead Revisited), Shackleton stars Kenneth Branagh (Henry V, Hamlet) as the legendary explorer.

Boring historical crud. This story would have been good as a 2 hour program but they stretched it out to make it all historically accurate with endless talking and people with turn-of-the-century facial hair. So lame. They should remake this as a Hollywood epic with Russell Crowe and have him kick some as*esUnbelievable Story - Believable Movie - Ariadne
The story of Ernest Shackleton and his crew of explorers that is that of survival, overcoming adversity and the power of will and persistence. This collection is impressive in its scope and accurate in its portrayal of the voyage (the film recreates scenes that were captured in photographs that were actually taken on the trip) and captures the anxiety that built from the fear of an unknown future that the crew saw in their future.
The film starts off strong in its development of Shackleton's quest for funding and support from the government and his family. My only qualm is that as the film progresses into the actual voyage, it feels rushed, almost as if the film crew was running out of time and money (strange parallel...intentional?). This film could easily have had 3 parts rather than two.
The special effects are hit and miss - some of the panned shots of the Endurance trapped in the frozen sheets in the Antarctic ocean are terrifying, whereas the footage of the ship sinking (I hope I didn't give anything away...) looks like a toy boat sinking in a tub of ice water - but the story of survival and the intensity of the situations the men faced are what keep the film exciting from beginning to end.
