Wives and Daughters
"More than almost any book I know, this neglected masterpiece tells us what it feels like to be alive." -Andrew Davies, Screenwriter of "Wives and Daughters"
From the screenwriter and producer of Pride And Prejudice comes a deliciously engaging costume drama in the tradition of Jane Austen. Set in a richly portrayed society well-stocked with eccentric nobles and gossipy villagers, the story centers around a 17-year-old Molly Gibson, the only daughter of a respected country doctor. The well-ordered world of Molly's childhood is soon to be complicated by new people and unexpected situations. Most devastating is her father's decision to remarry after many years of widowhood. Molly's faltering efforts to cope gracefully with an impossible stepmother, a beguiling stepsister, burdensome secrets and burgeoning romance ring as true today as when Elizabeth Gaskell wrote Wives And Daughters in 1865.

3rd Disc Special Features ONLY. - nkm1
The 3rd Disc of Wives and Daughters is Special Features ONLY. There are no more episodes on this disc. It contains cast and crew biographies and a documentary about the making of the series. There are quick snippets of interviews with the actors, choreographer and such, but it is fairly self indulgent repetitive information.Well done and deeply emotional. - palmtree
Excellently crafted and well done. This is almost 5 hours long, but gripping and never slow or boring. The story lines are involved and compelling. Michael Gambon is excellent. The acting and direction is top quality. If you enjoy the long stories of Jane Austen, then you will enjoy this long story. However, you will find it quite different. The story is not all romance, with some tragedies and deeply moving parts. Well worth watching. After you have watched this, go watch "North and South" and "Crannford" and "Return to Cranford" which are more Elizabeth Gaskell stories.Superb - terbo
Another magnificent British production in the period drama vein full of character and charm brought to life by wonderful acting and authentic settings. Michael Gambon is perfect in his role as the unworldly Squire, and Francesca Annis is delightfully caustic as Molly's stepmother. Mrs Gaskell's novel is presented beautifully, every scene is a pleasure, and for a couple of hours we can be swept back in time. This title, with this cast, joins the best at the top of my personal list in this genre.
