Brutally dark - eli_quincy
The sixth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer finds almost every member of the cast facing demons, depression and unfulfilled lives, pretty much all at once. It's strange for Buffy that most of the comic relief in this dark season is provided by the Big Bads (for fear of spoilers, I won't go into further detail here). The show is still very strong, but I must admit that all the darkness became too much to bear after a while, and I missed the lighter tone of the show's early seasons.Changed My Mind - Season 6 IS a Great Season - E
I admit that I am one of the Buffy fans who originally believed this was not as good a season as others (except for the episode in which Buffy finds herself in an insane asylum. and the musical, "Once More with Feeling." Both episodes were two of the best ever in all of Buffy).
However, after viewing it again a few years later on DVD, I have changed my mind. I appreciate more the darkness Buffy finds herself coping with, not from vampires and evil beings, but from life itself. As she says to Dawn in the finale of Season 5, the hardest thing about life is living it. Keeping that in mind, I see now why the whole season was about Buffy being more challenged with working at a dead end job, raising her whiney sister, watching her friends struggle in their relationships, and wondering if this is all there is. It probably was a too reflective of life for many people rather providing the usual scifi escape.
Although I still believe Season 6 is the best of all them, I think this season now rates as as Second Best.Highly underrated - sparklish
Probably the most underrated season of Buffy, this one has been criticised for its darkness. Having unwillingly returned from the dead, Buffy is battles with depression and is generally pretty downbeat. But despite this, this is one of my favourite seasons and it did a great job of portraying the difficulties a lot of young people go through in trying to figure out the direction of their lives. The biggest highlight was the musical episode - Buffy and the cast sing and dance their way through yet another demon attack on Sunnydale. And this season's "Big Bad" is also one of the series most terrifying...
