The Way We Live Now
"The Way We Live Now" is a remarkably contemporary story that captures the power, passion and corruption at the dawn of the capitalist age.
Based on the novel by Anthony Trollope, this satire of Victorian society contains all the dynamic elements that made him one of the most celebrated and popular novelists of his day- The trials and tribulations of young love, the pettiness of upper class life, the raw energy and excitement of the most powerful city the world had ever seen, and the greed and corruption that lay just below its glittering surface.

Augustus Melmotte has tried his whole life to be one of the upper classes and now he thinks his wealth will buy him a position in this circle. The mystery surrounding his past however will threaten his daughter's future and bring down much more than he bargained for. Brilliant portrayals by David Suchet, Matthew Macfadyen, and Shirley Henderson bring this satirical novel to life most vividly.excellent adaptation - story1
If you've ever read a Trollope novel you may be concerned that a film adaptation may not do justice to his slow-developing plot line and detailed characterizations. Not so with this excellent BBC production. With its thoroughly modern story line centred on the more troubling aspects of capitalism - like a Victorian take on Oliver Stone's Wall Street - and absolutely first rate performances, especially from David Suchet, this makes for very enjoyable viewing.Must see! - Rai11
The Way We Live Now is one in a spate of recent BBC literary adaptations to feature high budgets, good actors and be written by Andrew Davies (who did the Pride & Predjudice with Colin Firth). A lot of the lit adaptations from the 70s and 80s are so dull and lifeless, but the new versions are just so alive, both relevent and entertaining! And The Way We Live Now is one of the best!
The story, largely about 19th century finanical scandals and the various characters obsession with money, is remarkably current. As the other reviewer mentioned, just think of Enron.
The film is beautifully shot and features an awesome cast including Shirley Henderson (who practically steals the movie), David Suchet, Cillian Murphy, Rob Brydon, and Matthew MacFadyen (who displays a gift for comic timing that didn't come through when he played Mr. Darcy in the recent Pride & Predjudice).
The Way We Live Now is both serious and entertaining. Highly recommended!
