I first heard about Alan Clarke in an interview with one of America's most interesting film makers, Harmony Korine who labelled Clarke as a personal favorite. I haven't seen the whole collection yet - in fact, I have only watched the original version of scum [ disc 1] and Made in Britain [ Disc 3 ] but on the strength of Made in Britain alone, this box set is essential viewing for anyone truly interested in brilliant cinema. I've really like Tim Roth for a long time - I first saw him in Reservoir Dogs when I was about 13 and was totally amazed at the realism he can exude. But after seeing wicked performance after wicked performanc, it was bizarre to discover that his first role surpasses everything else he's done since. Without a doubt this is one of the most captivating characters ever put on film, and if not for Tim Roth's familiarity, I would have been unable to see him as an actor at all. Without going too into detail so as to ruin the film, aside from Roth's genius, this film has many other fantastic qualities, most notably the detailed cinematography with it's beautifully composed long-takes. Absolute gold. I can't wait to see the Gary Oldman film and all the rest. Scum was pretty good too, but Made in Britain just blew it out of the water.
