Gone With the Wind boils down to a story about a spoiled Southern girl's hopeless love for a married man. Gone With the Wind opens in April of 1861, at the palatial Southern estate of Tara, where Scarlett O'Hara hears that her casual beau Ashley Wilkes plans to marry "mealy mouthed" Melanie Hamilton. Despite warnings from her father and her faithful servant Mammy, Scarlett intends to throw herself at Ashley at an upcoming barbecue at Twelve Oaks. Alone with Ashley, she goes into a fit of histrionics, all of which is witnessed by roguish Rhett Butler, the black sheep of a wealthy Charleston family, who is instantly fascinated by the feisty, thoroughly self-centered Scarlett.Gone with the Wind - Bumblebee
This movie deserves 5 stars just for the sheer epic melodrama!
I first saw this movie 20 years ago and was looking forward to watching it. My kids joined me and could not believe how different life was in the South before the Civil War. The entire cast was superb with Gable, Leigh and de Havilland delivering memorable performances. Yes, it was long... so we took a break and watched it over two evenings. Definitely worth watching!Lives up to its hype - even today - whitechick
An unbelievable epic story, well filmed, so perfectly melodramatically acted, everyone should see it. I can't believe I waited so long to finally watch it, it's so good it's even worth buying.
The characters are so memorable, lovable, and despicable (respectively, Rhet, Melly, and Scarlet, if you had to name just one!). The movie and its characters take you far away from the reality of today and are so different from todays films, yet it is an addictive four-hour-or-so long movie that will entrance you to the very end -- and not merely to hear Rhet's classic final line (which, after hearing it for real for the first time, was about the most perfect quote in movie history!)
