He Knew He Was Right
Behind their neat facades of Victorian propriety, Anthony Trollope's characters are bursting with life. A flirtatious vicar, two squabbling sisters, an ingenue and her meddling aunt... these are the friends and relations who surround Louis and Emily Trevalyan in the first blissful year of their married life. But things take a darker turn when the roguish Colonel Osborne (Bill Nighy) takes an interest in Emily, and, flattered by the resulting gossip, fans the flames of Louis's jealousy.

All BBC Masterpiece threatre movies do not dissappoint. This story was quite tragic. Thinking his wife was having an affair with her godfather leaves him to go crazy even though she really was not. Because he visits her and his obbsesive jeasouly he leaves her. This is a tragic lovestory. He drives himself crazy and to the brink of madness. Very sad ending.Enjoyable adaptation - Crumit
I'm a Trollope fanatic, so even though I'm predisposed to like the BBC adaptations of his novels, I'm finicky. I would give this one four stars, but there are some things that didn't quite work for me. Part of the problem for the filmmakers was that the book itself is a sort of split personality; there are two main storylines, one serious (especially when the Trollope prose narrative is removed) and one comical.
The most glaring problem was the irritating choice to have the actors occasionally speak directly to the screen. Yes, Trollope occasionally broke his narrative to address the reader, but it's more of a jolt to have this done on film. Also, some of the performances, especially in the principle storyline, were lackluster.
On the other hand, the subplot involving Aunt Stanbury in Wells was so well done that if that plot were the entire movie, I'd give it five stars. Anna Massey is excellent as Aunt Stanbury, and the others who circle her are all amusing, too.
