Murder One: Season 1
Sex. Lies. Murder.
Superstar defense attorney Theodore "Teddy" Hoffman is the man everyone wants on their side. But even he's surprised to find himself defending one man for murder, then a few hours later defending a different man for the same murder. The first man arrested is Richard Cross, an entrepreneur-philanthropist who's having an affair with the murder victim's older sister. After the charges against him are dropped, Neil Avedon, a hot young Hollywood actor, is charged with the crime. Yet as Hoffman delves deeper into the case, his gut instinct tells him Cross is still secretly involved, deftly manipulating witnesses and even terrorizing Hoffman's own family.
Take a seat on the jury as "Murder One" follows a single murder case, from the point of view of the defense attorney, for an entire season. A riveting and cleverly woven plot full of subtle deceptions, outright lies and murder, this case will keep you guessing until the final gavel falls.

OK, do not expect CSI or something like that, but the show is good. You get new information along with the show, and you do actually doubt about who could be guilty or not, and you guess along with the caracters. But that is not the point, they are defense lawyer, and as it was said by the boss, it does not matter if this guy I am defending is guilty or not, and I don't need to know to do my job. Some quotes are very smart, open minded. Worth renting I would say.Why was this series cancelled?!? - Cricri7
I am now midway through this series and I can't believe that it was cancelled. I am on the edge of my seat wondering who killed Jessica! There are a couple of suspects and, usually, in TV series you get really fast who is the culprit. This is not the case here. You have a great storyline and excellent actors. I ask myself why we don't see more of Barbara Bossom (who is Bochco's ex-wife). She is so believable as the district attorney, I can't believe that she hasn't had a bigger careet.
There are other excellent actors in this series. Stanley Tucci is always strong. The actor who plays Benzali's assistant is excellent also. The key to a good series or a good movie is to get strong supporting actors and he hits the key every time.
I expect that Season 2 will he horrible if it was cancelled or that Bochco hurt the feelings of television executives because an excellent series like this should not have been cancelled!Twin Peaks meets Law & Order - cathyottawa
Watching the mania that was the O.J. Simpson trial, and seeing how people were glued to their TV sets, watching it all unfold, Stephen Bochco got an idea.
What if they created a prime time courtroom drama that focused on only one case? The premise worked beautifully. They came up with a juicy plot, and offered a few key suspects to keep us guessing.
The casting was excellent. Daniel Benzali as lead defense attorney Ted Hoffman is outstanding, and his larger than life presence is the heart of the show. Stanley Tucci also stands out as a main suspect. He's the kind of villian you love to hate.
I can see why filemanager complains that this is a bit soap-operaish, with it's liberal use of background music, and characters that are sometimes over the top, but it worked for me.
Unfortunately, this was never a ratings winner, as viewers thought that if they missed an episode or two, they would be lost as to what was going on. Producers were quick to explain that each episode began with a quick recap, but it still just never found it's audience.
It did well enough to warrent a second season. But Daniel Benzali didn't return, and they all but abandoned the idea of following one case. It just wasn't the same.
It's nice to see this getting a second chance on DVD.
