W.C. & Mae a perfect team - jivejunkie
While not much of a W.C. Fields fan, I did actually find a few chuckles. The best of the set was My Little Chickadee, Mae West was the perfect comedy partner for W.C. and would say they are as funny together as Laurel and Hardy. A definite classic. If you are a Mae West fan also, this is worth checking out.W.C Fields Comedy Collection Disc 4 - Thumbs_Up
W.C.Fields - an icon of the golden age of film. If you're in the mood for a classic Fields flick, this is a great choice. The henpecked Fields sells his grocery business to buy an orange grove to the chagrin of his whole family. This is certainly a great classic, funny and entertaining. Some great scenes - like the blind man who visits the store, buys a pack of gum and wants it delivered because he doesn't want to "lug" it around with him. Lots of fun to watch and suitable for the whole family. Before "Family Guy" there was W.C. Fields. - Film_Prophet1
The Production Code required anybody on screen who does the wrong thing to get their commupance. They were probably too busy laughing their asses off to realize that W.C. Fields lies, Cheats, steals and abuses his way into scenes and is rewarded with riches in the end. Then again, It could be the fact that he has to deal with a nagging wife, Obnoxious kids and a last name no one can pronouce correctly at first.
His best film has to Be "It's a Gift". In this one his character, Harold Bisonette (Bis-son-ne) dreams of owning an orange grove but can't keep his grocery store in order. This really shows his comedic talent of making simple things into a struggle. Whether its attempting to shave with his daughter in front of the mirror or trying to get some rest that is interupted by a milkman, a cocoanut, a chain, an insurance salesman, a mother and daughter and baby Leroy.
He once said never to share scenes with dogs and kids because they will steal the spotlight. No one would blame him. In "The Bank Dick" his daughter knocks him over the head with a megaphone demanding a role for a film he somehow got to direct. Baby Leroy spills molasses on the floor and shove grapes In Fields's Throught in "Its' a gift". I would like to see "Never Give a Sucker an Even Break" on Dvd.
