Winston Churchill: Wilderness Years
He was out of power. He stood alone. And he was right.
In 1929, Winston Churchill believed his political career was finished. Ten years later, his brilliance and unconquerable spirit would lead the world in its desperate fight against Hitler. His life during this "lost decade" is an intimate view of the private man and the crucible that forged an indomitable force.
Churchill's Conservative Party had lost the General Election sweeping him out of office. Buried by his political rivals and cut off by his enemies, he was out of power, out of money as a result of the Wall Street crash, and politically isolated.
With the world either sleeping in isolationism or completely discounting a Nazi threat, Churchill's was a lone voice against the rising tide of Hitler until his triumphant, yet somber, return to power in 1939.

This eight part mini-series from the early eighties was well worth watching. A huge cast of top English actors and actresses ably support Robert Hardy's excellent portrayal of Winston. The only criticism I have of the series is that his opponents at Westminster were portrayed as lacking in intelligence. I have no doubt that they were intelligent men who thought they were doing the right thing. Unfortunately they were proved to be wrong.Great History - Oran
I gave this three stars for two reasons. The first:Robert Hardy gives a great performance in dealing with the many ideosyncrsies of Churchill's manners and a great supporting cast. The second: anything to do with this period of history is a reflection of, what I believe, of our own times and needs constant review lest we fall into the same troubled times.
The reason for deducting two stars is the sound reproduction. If you have a machine that can do so; I'd advise turning up the treble. The sound is very muffled. Very remanisent of the bad productions of "Upstairs Downstairs." I can't undertstand how a company with the reputation of the BBC goes to such lengths in giving us high quality shows and turns around an issue such terrible reproductions to the public. Having said all that, it is a great plot, great acting and great sets, once you adjust your ears.Three stars out of five.
