Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles - The Complete Campaigns
Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles - The Complete Campaigns is a groundbreaking science-fiction adventure series. In a masterful retelling of executive producer Paul Verhoeven's hit feature film Starship Troopers, this series features state-of-the-art 3-D CGI computer animation, as well as photo galleries and four bonus episodes in a four-disc set. Based on the novel by Robert Heinlein, the series follows the adventures of Rico, Carmen and Carl, a trio of high school buds as they become members of Lieutenant Razak's "Roughnecks." These unsung heroes are unaware that the battle of the bugs is about to re-erupt, sending them to the front lines of the first Interstellar War.

This has not aged well.
The CGI animation is really very poor and does not reflect the original movie( which I thought was great). The voice acting displays a distinct childlike quality.
Gone is anti-american sarcasm and gratuitous violence of the original film. In is a 'cartoon' suitable for ages 7-10.

I'm a big fan of both the black comedy/action Paul Verhoeven film and the Heinlein book this is based on. This whole series does a serious disservice to both. It ignores tongue-in-cheek fun of the movie and the militaristic philosophy of the book. It's interesting that it's rated for over 14 since it obviously was written by a bunch of pre-teens.
Basically each episode is: Find new bug monster, almost get overwhelmed by it's superior abilities, persevere through lots of yelling and random automatic weapons fire, repeat. Oh, and avoid any character development and serious injury to any human characters at all costs.
My affection for the other Starship Trooper projects and the reasonably good animation got me through the first disc of the series. I only got through one episode of the second disc.
If you liked the old GI Joe cartoon series, but found it too mentally demanding, this is the series for you.very childish - jws-
I rented the animated series in hopes of finding some of the magic that made the movie so interesting. What I found was dissapointment. It's just not possible to have an R rated movie first, and then try to continue the storyline with G rated material. This anitmated series was painfully aimed for 10 year olds on a Saturday morning. I'm not one for useless violence, but this is Starship Troopers we're talking about isn't it? There are fair amounts of fighting, but don't expect to find one single human casualty in disc #1. Like I said, this series is not meant for anyone after puberty.
As far as the animation is concerned, it shows it's age. The resolution is still good, but the human movement is aweful. An episode of Reboot can easily out compete the fluidity of movement. This is very evident when the characters are firing their guns. They did not animate recoil so there is a lost sense of power and realism. They could have been firing squirt guns with more life-like movements compared to this. This series really needed a dose of Japanese animation and influence. The cinematography is dull, and the camera shots are boring considering there are no physics limiting the artists' ideas.
I would suggest renting only disc 1 first rather than wasting your slots for all of them at once. This series shares the same name, but is most definately NOT Starship Troopers.
