A great TV series that I remember well from my childhood, Darren McGavin will always - to me - be Carl Kolchak, who must be one of the more memorable characters I've ever seen on TV. The interplay between Kolchak and his editor Vincenzo (Simon Oakland) is both brilliant and funny, as is - for the most part - Kolchak's relationship with the various Chicago police officers he deals with. The series lasted only this one season, and as you work through the three disks, you can see why in all honesty. The stories seem to get more outlandish as the season progresses. It was as if they were running out of material even while they were putting the first season together. By the end, the last episode ("The Sentry") seemed like nothing more than a reworked telling of the Star Trek episode "Devil In The Dark." In the last handful of episodes, the police Kolchak dealt with also took on a much less believable quality. Still, there are some really good episodes here. There's typical horror type stuff about werewolves and vampires and witches as well as more imaginative monsters such as Swamp Creatures and headless motorcycle riders and even a handful of pseudo-scientific episodes, such as the one about the thawed cells evolving into a pre-historic human. All in all, this series was good fun and watching the DVDs brought back some great memories.
