The Zone's Twilight Season - Frederic
Are there any good episodes in Season 5?
Disc One is the best with
(1) "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" stars William Shatner and is living proof that he can be a good actor. This episode is so good it was chosen to be remade in the Twilight Zone movie.
(2) "Living Doll" is considered one of the top 25 episodes. It has sound bites on the Starting Menu of each Disc (I'm Talking Tina ....). This episode was somewhat remade with Karen Black in Trilogy of Terror and also more directly spoofed in the Simpsons with the Crusty Doll episode for Treehouse of Terror.
(3) Incidentally another sound bite from the Menu (Why are you five years old, Pip?) is also from the Disc One episode "In Praise of Pip", but the episode is no great shakes, even with Klugman.
Disc Three has a Richard Matheson episode that I like called "Night Call". An old woman's phone keeps ringing in the middle of the night and at first there is no one on the line.
Disc Four has "Masks" which some people think is great but seems a bit weak, you could probably guess the ending a third of the way through.
That's about it though. The rest are lame but at 23/24 minutes each, they're way better than Season 4.
Oh, and Disc 6 "Return" is not an episode but an hour-and-a-half documentary on Rod Serling. It's not bad but really the Disc should be labelled as extra material.Twilight Zone's Last Gasp - Doug3
By the time Twilight Zone came to its 5th season, it had passed its prime. True, there are some classic episodes - "Nightmare At 20,000 Feet" and "The Masks" - but the change of producers, the tiredness of head writer Rod Serling and the general lack of good scripts meant that the show was repeating old formulas, and not very well. The best of the Twilight Zone were Seasons 1,2 and 3. Seasons 4 and 5 are recommended for those of you (like me) who simply want to have seen all of the originals. But there's a lot of junk to get through.Nightmare At 20,000 Feet - bwod
I rented Disc 1 of this set for the terrifying episode, "Nightmare At 20,000 Feet". A certain well-known starship captain stars in this story, dated from 1963. Recently released from a sanitarium, after having a nervous breakdown on an airplane, our hero is now flying home with his wife, completely cured. Unfortunately, his self-control is soon jeapordized, when he sees something frightening outside on the wing of the plane. To make matters worse, no one else in the craft can see his terrifying vision. Is this paranoia justified, or has the unsettled passenger simply relapsed into a delusional state? William Shatner delivers a powerful performance as the happless traveller, facing a true nightmare, only he can understand. Highly recommended for fans of The Twilight Zone and horror films, even though the episode runs only 25 minutes. Two thumbs up!
