Water
A group of widows struggle to combat the societal restrictions placed upon them.
A child bride loses her husband and is taken to an ashram, which houses widows, pariahs in traditional Hindu society. The women are forced to carry out their lives in an ascetic manner. Forbidden to love or mix with the community, they must use their time only to work and pray. The film profiles a few of these women: Kalyani (Lisa Ray), finds love in a handsome activist (John Abraham) and tries to break free from her lonely life; Chuyia (Sarala), a vivacious child, gets into mischief and struggles to understand her circumstances; the enigmatic Shakuntala (Seema Biswas), who appears to have given up all hope until something is awakened in her. Kulbushan Kharbanda and Manorama also star in this final segment of Deepa Mehta’s trilogy, which includes Fire and Earth.

Usually when a movie is named after one of the elements chances are it's going to be something so far up its own ~rear end~ it'll be boring garbage that no one wants to really see but watches just to be all lame about it because this is lame and stupid and you will find no joy in watching this , you cant even drink it, WATER MY BUTTAmazing Film - Hobgoblin
Wow! Breathtaking cinema! Wonderful!
This is a "political" film with a not so subtle message, but that never takes away from the beauty of the film and the flow of the story line.
Lots of intellectually stimulating depth with the "water" theme, emotional tension through strong characters easily identified with despite the other time and place, and visual beauty of trees, colors and architecture.
Some may find this a depressing film, and many will shed a tear. But it is not dark, and there is a lot of postive hope bubbling under the surface.
Good job Deepa Mehta.Don't miss this! - eleanorm
What a stunning movie! Beautifully acted and filmed, the juxtaposition of so many elements -- youth, age, loss, hope,
faith, total submission to tradition and "what is written" and the new way of thinking which Gandhi represented -- all add up to a gripping drama not to be forgotten easily. The ever present water in which everyone bathes, which washes away not only the dog's fleas but also sins, becomes a major character in the drama as it flows quietly through everyone"s life-- and death.
This is definintely a "must see" movie, but be prepared to be drawn in -- nothing superficial about this one.
