The original Diva - Teeveebuff
Long before Cher, Diana Ross and Madonna, there was Mae West. She truly paved the way for women that wanted to blaze their own trail. Mae West was writing and performing her own plays in the twenties that left people speechless. Her movie career was short lived because of the backlash from conservative America. But the films she did do are examples of a women who really was her own person and was an individual during an era where women were not encouraged to do so!The Lady Is Unforgettable! - Port_Moresby
GO WEST YOUNG MAN
La West is in fine form but the movie disappoints this time; the censors took a razor blade to her humorous one-liners and left her with a cleverly constructed but rather limp romantic comedy. She plays a world-famous movie star whose car breaks down during a publicity tour, forcing her and her dog-guard press agent (Warren William) to shack up in a quaint boarding house in a tiny dustmite of a town. While there she finds herself getting sweet on hunky mechanic Randolph Scott, much to the chagrin of his girlfriend. The great dame is terrific (just watch the moment where she checks out Scott’s ass), and she does a pretty good job with the script, but without her devilish innuendos (it’s actually adapted from someone else’s play and she doesn’t fully succeed in fitting it to her style) there isn’t much point in watching it.
MY LITTLE CHICKADEE
Two comedic giants are teamed up in this hilarious comedy. Mae West stars as a woman of spotty reputation who is driven out of her tiny little western town for her affair with the masked bandit who’s been robbing stagecoaches. On the train to her new destination she meets drunken lout W.C. Fields and, mistakenly thinking him wealthy, tricks him into a sham marriage to save her hide from the pious women waiting to lynch her at the upcoming station. When she arrives, however, Fields is made the new sherriff in town and West keeps up her liaison with the bandit while also charming the rest of the men in her new town. West’s wiggle and Fields’ delivery are entertainment enough, but this one also includes a fun musical number and some very hilarious slapstick as well. A bonafide classic.
