Shame on HBO - ronburgundy
With all the crap on television these days and the critical acclaim received, HBO dropped the ball canceling this one. I love getting these HBO series and watching them from start to end uninterrupted. I suppose business is business and the average wants American Idol. The second season continues to build on the intrigue of the first as the imminent clash between good and evil builds. I wonder if they knew in advance this would be the last season as it seemed to move quickly....not sure where they'd continue to go for a few more seasons. The last episode kind of just ends. I think at least one more season would do it justice.Gorgeous, but unsatisfying really - lookingjust
Season 2 has all the qualities of season 1 - high production values, wonderful cinamatography, good writing (if a bit oblique and deliberately confusing plotlines in some examples) and great quirky characters - just typical of what makes the best of HBO so superior to "normal" TV. I do think the series got a bit lost though and meandered awfully slowly to the climax - which was a semi-climax unfortunately, on the assumption the series would continue to season 3. I'm not quite sure the gorgeous scenery/sets and mostly wonderful acting quite offset the slow pace, intentionally oblique plots, and in the end, lack of true resolution. It was a good ride, but perhaps not as good as it could have been - I'd only recommend this series to someone I knew would like the historic context and appreciate the quirky characters, not someonw that wants a good satisfying storyline. So good - Nicole3
Carnivale is another one of those shows that got cancelled because of poor ratings and high production costs, but HBO should at least wrap it up with a feature-length film, like they are planning on doing with Deadwood! The series is so spellbinding and tightly woven, and having it leave on an unfinished note is just wrong. I was expecting something more of a cliffhanger though, like season 1, but it wasn't that bad. And am I wrong to think that Clancy Brown is kind of hot in his vestments? I already miss it, and I just finished watching the last disc three days ago.
