Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
A young woman participates in the elaborate ruse of her lover in order to escape from an imminent arranged marriage.
Choudhary Singh (Amrish Puri) and his wife live in London but long for the green fields of Punjab. They believe in Indian traditions and arrange the marriage of their daughter, Simran (Kajol), with the son of a family friend in Punjab. Simran, desperate to experience life before settling down, takes a tour of Europe with her friends and meets dashing Raj (Shah Rukh Khan). When Choudhary finds out about Simran’s romance with Raj, he whisks the family off to India to expedite Simran’s marriage. Raj follows her there and infiltrates the pre-wedding festivities as a means of ingratiating himself with Simran’s family.

Having watched a succession of uninspiring Bollywood movies recently, this one was a pleasant surprise. It wasn't *great*, but I got into the story and actually cared what happened to the two main characters (always a good sign, right?) I do wonder who does the English subtitles for Bollywood films, though - often they are not quite right, hard to understand or unintentionally funny. Also, for some reason, on the menu screen for this film, it took forever for the little heart to show up which made it possible to choose different options.
