I've never seen the original Clerks, but it didn't really matter. I have to admit that I laughed at some things (the Star Wars vs. Lord of the Rings debate, for example) and the "ABC" dance scene was cute, and I felt the movie had some interesting things to say about adulthood and friendship, but honestly, the rest of the movie was so misogynist and offensive that I had a really icky feeling I couldn't get rid of. I do love Silent Bob's facial expressions, and Jay's insistence that Dante and Randel are in love was kind of awesome, but I just can't recommend this.

Though this film is a sequel to the first Clerks movie, it stands on its own two feet. The characters of Dante and Randel return, this time as burger flippers, and the movie follows them through a very eventful day. They debate culture, talk about racism, harass their co-workers and trade insults with their customers. Through the film, it becomes apparent that while Dante is planning to leave the business and get married, he also has romantic feelings for his boss.

The film is non-stop laughs and will likely strike true with anyone who has worked in the service industry. Like Clerks, the film is funny, offensive in all the right ways, and shows Dante's struggle between being comfortable and taking a chance on something. Unlike Clerks, this movie has a fresh, fast feel. The camera work and sets are modern and well done, the film moves faster and the actors have more experience.

This may be Kevin Smith's funniest film to date and a great, entertaining ride.

The story of "Clerks" is legendary. How 23 year old convenience store clerk Kevin Smith - making $5.50 an hour, maxed out credit cards to the limit to make "Clerks" a tiny, grainy, raw black and white movie about two slackers working crummy convenience store jobs. The movie made for under $300.000 went on to dominate the independent film circut in 1994. "Clerks" along with "Pulp Fiction" ushered in the independent film craze that represented the 1990's. Twelve years later, with a multi-million dollar budget, big Hollywood stars Smith returns to Red Bank, New Jersy - Skeeball capital of the world to tell the ongoing events in the lives of Dante (Brian O'Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson).
Not much has changed. After a fire destroys the Infamous "Quick-Stop" Dante and Randal are now true counter-culture lackeys working at "Moobeys" restaurunt. They still spend their days dealing with bratty kids and customers who look down on them. Dante is engaged to shrill Emma (Smith's real life wife - Jennifer Schwalbach Smith) who he plans to live a dour unexciting future. He's also madly in love with perky, freespirit "Moobeys" hottie manager Becky (played with aplomb by Rosario Dawson). It's Dante's last day at "Moobeys" and he has to deal with moving on - so does Randal but he doesn't do a good job of it.
Sooo...what works is of course the chemistry between Dante and Randel. The way Halloran and Anderson play off each other does bring that spark to the movie that is missing throughout. What doesn't is ironically all the stuff that's supposed to make the sequel better. Bigger budget, brighter colors, Hollywood star cameoes. It sinks the movie with lead boots. The scrappy charm of the first movie is gone. It's also the most preachy movie Smith has made (besides "Jersey Girl" and "Dogma" which is his best movie.) Plus he throws in a happy musical number to "ABC"!?
I love Smith but this movie just stalls. Bigger is not always necessarily better.
