Eragon
As darkness falls, the last dragon will choose its rider.
When Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it's the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy; maybe now he'll be able to buy food for the winter for his family. But when the stone turns out to be an egg from which a baby dragon is hatched, Eragon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself. Overnight his simple life is shattered, and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic, and power.
With only an ancient sword and the advice of an old storyteller for guidance, Eragon and the fledgling dragon must navigate the dangerous terrain and dark enemies of an Empire ruled by a king whose evil knows no bounds. Can Eragon take up the mantle of the legendary Dragon Riders? The fate of the Empire may rest in his hands.
Based on the best-selling novel by Christopher Paolini.

It's a dragon movie after all. It follows the fill-in-the-blanks of all fantasy sci-fi movies:
Eragon is a nobody growing up with an uncle until he's thrust into magical circumstances.
(Harry Potter is a nobody growing up with an uncle until he's thrust into magical circumstances)
(Luke Skywalker...)
(Frodo Baggins ...)
That aside, there are times when you actually worry for the safety of the dragon and its rider. That was a nice twist. The dragon isn't an all knowing mystical creature the way many are (see BBCs Merlin 2008). Eragon and the dragon are learning together.
The acting is brutal in a few parts but it's decent overall and the door has been left open to some sequels.
I haven't read any of the books, and I thought it was a fine rainy afternoon movie.Good film - Spacey
I thought the film was good. The acting was good from most of the actors. I did find John Malkovich to have given a 'flat'/one dimensional effort toward this film. I think he could have done better and watching him in this villainous role seemed very similar to his past 'bad guy' roles.
The film did seem to be very basic and there wasn't anything special that could separate it from movies like Dragonheart. I think the movie did need more flair/life than what it gave. It seemed like a basic, traditional boy and dragon story, but without the magic of The Neverending Story, action of Reign of fire, or villainy of Dragonheart.
I really enjoyed how Guillory portrayed her character and the voice work by Weisz. You could really feel the emotion in her voice as she spoke. I thought the scenery was beautiful, and think that more shots in that beautiful place could only have helped the film (think Lord of the Rings scenery and the effect of that on the film).
All in all it was a good film. Don't expect too much from it other than a good story, good acting, and beautiful scenery.Mediocre but not terrible - SomeCallMeTim
The film's biggest flaw is that it seems to expend all of its energy in a few brief moments scattered through the film. The effects are good, the characters are interesting enough, but in the end about all you can say was "that was it???" Maybe the writer's work will mature a little for the sequel and he will improve his pacing.
I wouldn't even to begin to compare this movie to Lord of the Rngs, it is hard to compare it with almost any movie. It actually works out more like a TV show that was stretched out to hit movie length. I don't regret watching it but I almost feel like I must have fallen asleep a few times and missed parts.
