Hawaii Five-O: Season 1
Filmed entirely on location in Hawaii, the show followed Jack Lord as he played Steve McGarrett, head of an elite state police unit investigating "organized crime, murder, assassination attempts, foreign agents, felonies of every type." James MacArthur played his second-in-command Danny ("Danno") Williams, with local actors Kam Fong, Zulu, Al Harrington, and Herman Wedemeyer, among others, playing members of the Five-O team. Guest stars included Helen Hayes, Ricardo Montalban, Leslie Nielsen, Herbert Lom, Hume Cronyn among others. McGarrett's nemesis is the evil Wo Fat - "a Red Chinese agent in charge of the entire Pacific Asiatic theatre.

I have always felt that Hawaii 5-0 was one of the greatest detective shows ever made.
Jack Lord was excellent in the lead role, always so intense on the job. Neverless, they managed to inject the occasional humor into the show.
I also loved those big black Fords they drove.
The Hawaiian actors also played their parts well.
I have only seen the beginning disks, but adding James MacArthur as Dan-o was a great idea.Hawaii Five-O; Season 1 - Catahoula
I started watching this series in 1968, and have not seen these first episodes for 30 years. The DVD quality is superb. You can also google the Hawaii 5-0 Homepage is the best in terms of commentary. I suggest you consult it. The phrase "Book'em Danno" was not used in the early episodes. Episode 4 is very interesting if you can believe Ricardo Montalban is Japanese. By episode 6 in season 1, Five-0 may have been in danger of being cancelled. There are a lot of continuity errors. In Episode 6, Disk 1, McGarret leaves the office in a two-door car and arrives in a four-door.
One sees beautiful scenes of Hawaii, well before the condo boom. The plots hold up."Book em, Danno - valentinebrown
Hawaii 5-0 premiered on CBS in 1968 and would run for 12 seasons starring Jack Lord as Steve McGarritt. It's easy to see why this show was such a success: great stories set in an exotic location and a tough as nails but charismatic lead character. A concept so clear Miami Vice (among many) would update it almost 20 years later.
Some aspects of the first season are now unintentionally funny. The counter-culture/hippies are portrayed as shallow flakes most of the time and when Jack Lord is given a speech about Steve's desire for a peaceful world,it's hard to hold in the snickering.
Overall, a very well done show. It's kind of a mystery to me why CBS hasn't made an updated version of this with all the CSI Miami, New York, and Lincoln Nebraska locations...Hawaii seems like a no-brainer.
