Good Old Jimbo - newdaysof
The Rockford Files was a very popular show in it's time and still holds up well today. The main reason is James Garner and his character James Rockford are both so likeable. No matter what happens to him, he always remains a gentleman with a sense of humour.
His supporting cast are also likeable: his dad Rocky, Beth his lawyer, Dennis Becker the police detective who has a love/hate relationship with him. And of course, Angel played brilliantly by Stu Margolis. Angel is such a backstabbing, shifty, shady character, but is funny and somewhat likeable at the same time. And it's fun to watch when Jimbo and Angel set up a con operation on some underworld crook and get away with it.
Some of the plots and characters are overused and tired - usually some syndicated crime boss involved in drugs and money and kidnapping. After awhile, the plots get a little boring. But they occasionally come up with really interesting ones.
I think Jim Rockford's character appeals to so many men because he is a bachelor, goes on dates with lots of beautiful women, doesn't have an office job or have to answer to a boss, gets to roam around and go on a lot of adventures (and misadventures). He is generally a free man with no worries, lives by the ocean and can go fishing whenever he feels like it. And the women who watch the show like his character because of his good looks, charm and kindness.Classic detective series - palmtree
Another great season of the Rockford files. Jim Rockford is a no-nonsense detective who just works enough to spend most of his days fishing and living in his trailer by the sea. He doesn't like violence, but he's tough when he needs to be. One of the highlights of the show is the car chases with big boats of cars - neat old cadillacs and continentals, etc. There's always some goons chasing Rockford, and he's always trying to get his way out of a scrape. Classic TV series!
