Very solid Series that holds up Well - Mookie
While it falls below the Rockford Files this is still a series that will be fun for people who like episodic mysteries. There is some nice humour, the pacing of the story is very well done and even though the clues laid out during the episode don't really allow you to play along (i.e. get enough info to solve the mystery) you don't feel cheated at the end by a solution that was impossible to figure out. Yeah, some of the solutions are a bit over the top but I think that is part of the charm of the show.
Banacek (the first Polish detective?) is played VERY dry by Peppard. Most of the time I like his wit but there are times he is so flat it comes across as wooden. The stories are a nice formula - something mysteriously disappears and it is up to Banacek to find it for 10% of the insurance money. Along the way Banacek finds some woman to sleep with while he smokes his ultra thin cigars. I like the fact he is not a detective trying to make ends meet but very well to do, this allows him interactions a Rockford wouldn't have.
Overall, I enjoyed watching these episodes a lot. A classic that is still fun to watch today.Great series - wish it had had a longer run - outlander78
Banacek is a highly entertaining, stylish mystery show from the 1970s. The impossible mysteries (often heists, not murders) are great puzzles to watch solved, and the banter between the regulars combines great writing with great delivery.
Each show includes faux Polish proverbs that oddly make sense when they have no right to, and plenty of jokes besides. If you like watching smart, cocky detectives solve seemingly impossibly mysteries, then give this show a watch.
