Leone is Masterful when it comes to assembling a wiing screenplay and all the players. This movie is yet another example of the Master. Simple Plot combined with the bacckgorund history of each main protagonist. The revolutionary, the mon on a quest for $$, evil tyrants and just plain mean spirited characters. Excellent photography for the period and most excellent and another haunting soundtrack by Ennio. A must see for all Spaghetti Western fans! Steiger & Coburn excel coming very close ot Fonda & Eastwood. A Classic.Hidden Gem - newdaysof
Sergio Leone is known for his trilogy of spagetti westerns as well as Once Upon A Time In America, but Fistful Of Dynamite is one of his virtually unknown classics.
No one has depicted the Mexican Revolution on such a grand scale as Leone has done in this film. It manages to be funny, sentimental and devastatingly violent. Ennio Morricone has written yet another beautiful score that perfectly sets the mood.
Leone spared no expense to get panoramic shots of the most starkly beautiful landscapes and took great care to assemble so many battle scenes. I can't remember seeing a film in which dynamite and explosions were such an integral part of the plot and cinematography. So many of the scenes are carefully crafted and you may want to watch the movie a second time around. My only complaint is some of the scenes are disgusting and extremely violent.
Rod Steiger and James Cobourn are both brilliant as Juan and John - reluctant Mexican and Irish revolutionaries who are at first at odds with each other, but eventually gain each other's respect and friendship. The story has a strong message about class struggle and the resulting social upheaval that eventually led to the Mexican Revolution.Maybe not a classic but quite good - Coconut_Willy
I am not really a western fan but I really like Sergio Leone. Although this movie may not be in the same class as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly or Once Upon A Time..., it is still good enough and superior to most westerns. The first thing that struck me was the excellent restoration job made here. If you have seen this movie before on television, I believe that you will be impressed with its renewed quality. The storyline is not the best and the movie drags on a bit too long in my opinion but it is a lot less serious than Leone's other movies and I thought that the humor worked quite well in general. The sets and locations are very good, the Ennio Morricone soundtrack is excellent and the camera work is superior. One can of course get a bit tired with the extreme closeups that are sometimes a bit long but the use of such shots is a bit more reasonable in this movie that does not lend itself to a lot of it. Good action scenes, many funny moments and a good cast doing a fine acting job. An overall enjoyable viewing experience.
