Irwin Allen strikes again! - Chucky
I loved Land of the giants when I first saw it back in 1960 something. Finding it on DVD was akin to being reunited with an old friend. The entire premise is as wonderful as it is fanciful.
Its hard to tell which of Irwin Allin's series I like most, I guess it just depends on my mood. If you like good, safe, family appropriate television, you owe it to yourself to take a look at this series.Impressive !! - fairweather
This was the first drama series I ever watched and it impressed me as a child. I always wanted to see it again. The scene I most remembered was the little girl capturing some of the little people and putting them in her dollhouse. I had a dollhouse and thought that would be very neat (Ok, I was preschool). So when zip got this series I wanted to see it just to remind me of why it was so memorable and dear to my heart (I had watched it before I was six). I thought my children would find it corny, with what I expected to be poor old special effects, but the storyline and acting are gripping and the effects are fine, so that they had no problem enjoying it and they actually wouldn't tear themselves away until the end of the episode. The situations draw you in and you CARE about the characters so that you want to watch and see what happens to them. Frankly, it is just good storytelling. We are really enjoying going through the series and as it is not very violent or with questionable morals in it, which allows you to enjoy it purely for the adventure and creative situations the characters end up in. (Though there are some very "scary" or suspenseful parts for very little ones in it- PG, I didn't remember any of those, perhaps edited for TV at the time.) Like skeletons and people being eaten by spiders. But there were good and bad episodes. So you better edit it if you want your little ones to see it. The other day my son asked me about why birds are so flighty, and I reminded him of how small and vulnerable "the little people" feel on the "Land of the Giants" series. That helped a lot with empathy for little creatures and how they view the world and he is conciously kind and gentle to little creatures now with that understanding. Perhaps being put in their place and having to cope with it.
