Dexter: Season 1
Dexter is based on the compelling novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. Orphaned at the age of four and harboring a traumatic secret, Dexter Morgan (Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actor Michael C. Hall from Six Feet Under) is adopted by a police officer who recognizes Dexter's homicidal tendencies and guides his son to channel his gruesome passion for human vivisection in a constructive way - by killing those heinous perpetrators that are above the law or who have slipped through the cracks of justice. A respected member of the police force, a perfect gentleman and a man with a soft spot for children, it's hard not to like Dexter. Although his drive to kill is unflinching, he struggles to emulate normal emotions he doesn't feel, and to keep up his appearance as a caring, socially responsible human being.

This is the first time I can truly without hesitation and not feeling like I am using a cliche, or sound like a trite movie reveiw, use the word, "mesmerizing." Everything, the camera work focusing on the minutiae of food, blood and dead white bodies; the actors, especially Michael C. Hall(Dexter),Jennifer Carpenter(Debra) and Erik King(Doakes)to name a few. The sounds and sights of Miami; the voice-over from Dexter; the flashback of his childhood with his caring father, all come together in this amazing show, where you find yourself, the audience, actually cheering for a serial killer!! Don't even start watching the first episode, unless it is a weekend, 'cause you won't be able to stop watching every episode!!DARK DEXTER IS DELIGHTFUL - StEpHuLAr
I have to admit, unlike many, I couldn't wait for this show. I had never heard of Michael Hall and never watched 6 Ft Under (bit after seeing Hall in Dexter, I quickly added all Seasons of 6 ft to my Ziplist). I was familliar with Dexter, the character from the Lindsay books. The screen adaptation, although very different, is brilliant.
I'm not oing to delve into the differences, or be another one of those "the book is a lot better" person, mostly because it's just not true. This show works well on so many levels, it's incredible. Who ever thought a show with a serial killer as its main protagonist could be a hit ? Congrats to Showtime are in order for airing something different, and from the reviews here & the success of the show's second season, it was a gamble that paid off (the highest ever ratings for any Showtime Original show).
To accurately describe Dexter is difficult, but consider this: it's the kind of show that you feel is your own little discovery, sort of like that band you liked before they became a hit (even though it actually has a large following, and it's not just your own personal little guilty pleasure).
Do youself a favour, and rent the first DVD of this show to give it a try. Everything's in there to keep all kinds of viewers entertained. Great camera shots for the more technical viewers, great dialogue & voice-overs for those who need a good script, and great suspense, comedy (dark) and music for the rest of us who just like to be entertained!
This is the 5th review for this show and nobody has given it a rating under 5/5 stars. That alone speaks volumes on its quality. Enjoy !sick, dark, unpleasant - outlander78
Dexter is the most “anti” anti-hero I have seen in a show. True, it is about a serial killer who targets other serial killers, but I was not expecting a lead character who has no emotions, no connections to normal people. It is impossible to feel a positive connection to such a person – he has no motivation beyond his need to kill. I know this show has an audience, but I personally found this show to be incredibly disturbing.
