The second of the (first) Pirates trilogy made a ton of money. But while it built off the box office success of its predecessor, it is an inferior film in several regards. The first is the editing. While the second film is less than 10 minutes longer than the first in run time, it feels much longer. It takes the stellar Captain Jack to keep the movie moving at times. The second issue is the plot. The first one was a relatively tight fetch the treasure story. The second is hampered by having to info-dump all the way through - it is setting the stage for the third. This makes the plot seem rather more contrived than it needed to be. This is still a fun movie to watch. Beyond Depp, Bill Nighy and the supporting cast are great and Bloom and Knightley are kept back from the over-acting edge as much as can be expected. The effects, minus a few very short shots and some parts of the end effect, are really good. The ships look fantastic (and they should - they built them). It sounds great, but there are far fewer naval engagements in this one than the first (or the third). A movie about pirates in boats ought to be pushing the sound system. My disappointment with this film was not fully alleviated on second watching - I expected a lot from the #4 grossing film of all time worldwide. But the movie is still a lot of fun.No bottle of rum - hilkayaker
Ouche! This movie did not live up to expectations for me. I don't know why, but frequently I find the second movie in a series is bad, but the first and third are amazing. I found this the case in this movie. I did not like it at all. I only bought the 1st & 3rd movies and I skip this one.
