The War
In Extraordinary Times, There Are No Ordinary Lives - 1941-1945
The War, a seven-part series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, tells the story of the Second World War through the personal accounts of a handful of men and women from four quintessentially American towns. The series explores the most intimate human dimensions of the greates cataclysm in history - a worldwide catastrophe that touched the lives of every family on every street in every town in America - and demonstrates that in extraordinary times, there are no ordinary lives.

THE WAR - Katt
An excellent documentary with an interesting format. Ken Burns has interviewed war survivors from four American towns at different ends of the country. Some of these people served in the war, others were relatives who waited at home and worked in the war effort. He shows how everyone was affected by the events of the war. Interviews of the veterans are followed by footage of the battles in which these men fought.
I am learning a great deal about the 2nd world war. I knew about it from the aspect of the Canadian forces and the areas where they fought, but had little knowledge of the war in the South Pacific against the Japanese. Ken Burns does not make much mention of the part played by the Allied Nations - it looks as if America is fighting the war on its own, but that is my only criticism. The documentary is fascinating and I will be watching all the episodes.Ken Burns' The War - CrazyCatLady
Ken Burns, the master of Americana, has created another masterpiece documentary series. This one tells the story of America's involvement in World War II. Burns tells his story from the perspective of four American towns, and how the war affected them.
Using veterans, POW camp survivors, soldiers' families, and other civilian participants all reflecting on their memories, this series is a must see if you are interested in World War II and/or love Ken Burns' work. True, he doesn't really talk much about the other Allied countries participation in the war, but that is not the story he's telling here. And that's all right, as these are stories that are worth telling. He puts a personal face on the war, and I found it very moving. This series may be six discs long, but I guarantee you that it's worth it.Ken Burns-The War - Strat9
Another brilliant documentary from Ken Burns. probably as good as The Civil War with the added bonus of actual footage and interviews from WWII. Disk One takes some liberties with the facts but that is a very small criticism. Book a full weekend because I guarantee you'll be hard pressed to stop watching once you've started.
