A Bridge Too Far
In September 1944, flush with success after the Normandy Invasion, the Allies confidently launched Operation Market Garden, a wild scheme intended to put an early end to the fighting by invading Germany and smashing the Reich's war plants. But a combination of battlefield politics, faulty intelligence, bad luck and even worse weather led to disaster beyond the Allies darkest fears.

A bridge too far is an absolute must see for fans of the war genre hands down. Even beyond the movie itself which I’d consider a fantastic, without question the cast is a block buster – I’m remotely curious while writing this what the final tally was on this one. Today’s cinema could have spruced up the picture visually in terms of modernizing the look and feel but ultimately there would be nothing you could do differently to make this a better picture today. Great movie. Not for those who aren't war film fans, but if you are this is a must see - Lone_Wolf
A Bridge Too Far focuses on the failed ‘Operation Market Garden’ during World War II, in which the allies attempted to parachute thousands of soldiers into Belgium followed by tanks from France in order to open a route straight into the heart of industrial German, thus ending the war by Christmas. It didn’t work. A Bridge Too Far follows this story from both the perspective that the commanders had as well as what it was like for the men on the ground, and does a very good job at doing both.
We get a very good sense of what the plan was as well as why Market Garden turned out to be a failure. The movie also does a great job showcasing the intense battles for the key bridges as well as the arduous push down the narrows roads that were to become known as “Hell’s Highway”. The battle sequences look authentic and are chaotic, although are a little dated do to the fact that Saving Private Ryan has made us look differently at war sequences. The all star cast is, indeed, all star. Some people see this as a plus, others as a negative. I didn’t feel either way about it, but was simply content that all the huge actors turned in good performances and that none of them had their personalities overshadow their roles. Despite the length the movie is still very well paced and it never really lets up.
All in all, A Bridge Too Far might not be considered one of the best World War II movies out there, but I certainly thought it did a great job at accurately and entertainingly portraying the failure at Market Garden from both a tactical and soldier’s point of view. The battles are very well done, very intense and the movie is never a bore. Despite all the huge stars there is really no stand out performances, and the movie is a bit dated now that it is thirty years old, but overall it’s one of the better World War II movies out there, and is most importantly enjoyable to watch.Solid WW2 film - Cine
Okay, so if you're looking for today's Band of Brothers/Saving Private Ryan special effects, they are not here.....go rent those. If you want a 30 year old movie that wanted to tell the story correctly and in it's own time.....see this. War is a lot waiting around and then battle is fast and furious and deadly. This story is real, the action is good when it happens, and the history is sound. Based on historical fact more than other films it may seem long, but you get the idea of what was really happening. The interesting fact is that this movie was made about a lost battle. A huge lost battle. How rare is that? Additionally, it does not just focus on the Americans like most films. We get a view of all of the Allies involved: Americans, British and Polish troops as well as the German enemy. If you are history buff...you'll enjoy.
