Across the Universe
All You Need is Love
The enduring songs of The Beatles, set the tone for Across The Universe, a love story about a British boy and an American girl set against the backdrop of the social upheaval of the 1960s. The stirring music of the Fab Four will drive the narrative, with the actors singing and dancing to the classic tunes. The film is directed by acclaimed filmaker Julie Taymor (Frida, Titus) and is a feast for the eyes with it's stunning color and cutting edge visual style. Evan Rachel Wood (Thirteen) and Jim Sturgess play the young couple in love with supporting roles from Salma Hayek and Bono.

What starts out looking like an amateur highschool operetta gradually builds into an unexpectedly mature piece of cinema with strong performances throughout and a soundtrack that makes clever use of all those classic Beatles songs. The musical numbers may not always work but when they do they are bang on thanks in large part to some dazzling visuals and Taymor’s overall sense of artistic restraint. No, there are no amazing plot twists and you can guess how it will all end within the first 15 minutes but it’s the journey itself that is so appealing. For those who would accuse this film of being shallow and dull, may I remind you of that other musical based on the Beatles’ music, 1978’s vomit-inducing “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” featuring the Bee Gees. ‘Nuff said.Good if you like Beatles music - DaxKP
I really enjoyed this film, probably because I enjoy hearing music from the Beatles whenever I can. I thought the actors they got for it were great, and the story they built around the music worked. My favourite part of the movie, however, has to be the music. So, if you enjoy hearing The Beatles, you should enjoy the film as well.Amazing!! - Russ
