Into the Wild
This is the true story of Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch). Freshly graduated from college with a promising future ahead, McCandless instead walked out of his privileged life and into the wild in search of adventure. What happened to him on the way transformed this young wanderer into an enduring symbol for countless people - a fearless risk-taker who wrestled with the precarious balance between man and nature.
Based on a true story and the bestselling book by Jon Krakauer.

Now that's a phrase you don't often here, but it applies.
The film is based on an allegedly true story of a smart and friendly and exuberant young man from a dysfunctional family, who rejects materialism to search for truth and beauty. He winds up living solo in the Alaskan wilderness for a long time. He cruelly broke all ties with his family. And we knew tragedy was coming.
By the end, the film more or less conceded that the young man was wrong to reject society and cruel to his family, but by the end, I finally agreed that he had a lot going for him, and the way I lead my own life is grossly deficient by comparison, unproductive and unjoyful. I vowed yet again to live life to the fullest.
Plenty of contradictions. It was a tragedy, but inspirational. His family was dyfunctional, but loving. He won, and he lost, on his quest. He was totally wrong, but he was right.
The movie was gorgeous with a good soundtrack and a likeable protagonist. But the direction by Sean Penn wasn’t ‘fair’. When he liked something, it was portrayed with great beauty and completely skipped over anything unpleasant. Contrary to another reviewer, there was little sense of the immense tedium and discomfort that must have been plentiful. And when Penn didn’t like something, it was the opposite. The city was depicted as grim, threatening and dissonant.
I must warn you. My wife was greatly upset by this movie, actually angry that she had watched it. We have a son in his early 20s, who loves nature and beauty and truth and rejects materialism. Yeah, it's kind of a horror movie for parents.Powerful, poignant film. - moviemonger
A true story about a young man who leaves his middle class existence for a life of adventure in the North American wilderness. As dumb as Christopher McCandless was to die of hunger in the Alaskan woods in August 1992, there is something terribly moving about his story: a quality of innocence perhaps or an enviable courage about challenging himself. Sean Penn's film will increase the cult that has already grown around McCandless. With the whole of America as his backdrop, Penn pulls off his most ambitious movie yet. The result is a beautiful and thought-provoking road movie. Dreamy as that notion might be, however, Into the Wild isn't a completely convincing lionization. Into the Wild's escalating employment of mannered affectations, however, ultimately becomes a burdensome drag from which, like the itinerant path taken by McCandless himself, there's no triumphant return. Though, Brilliant performance by Hirsch, gets under the skin of the fascinating character at the centre of the piece. But whether you ultimately see McCandless as a basket case, searcher, aesthete or environmental visionary, his journey is one that is definitely worth taking with him. Penn has taken a difficult story and made a top-notch road picture that doubles as a quest for personal fulfillment.
