Labyrinth
Anniversary Edition
David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly invite you into a magic universe where nothing is what it seems! Babysitting infant stepbrother Toby on a weekend night isn't young Sarah's (Connelly) idea of fun. Frustrated by his crying, she secretly imagines the goblins from her favorite book, Labyrinth, carrying Toby away. When her fantasy comes true, a distraught Sarah must enter a maze of illusion to bring Toby back from a kingdom inhabited by mystical creatures and governed by the wicked Goblin King (Bowie).

This is in our home collection, and we don't have that many. I have loved this movie since I was a child. David Bowie makes a great Goblin King. I recommend it for any families collection.
There are parts that may frighten young children, but I think for 8 years and up its a great adventure.A fun fantasy that sits on the surface - rdees
Where The Dark Crystal succeeded in creating a beautifully dark fantasy, visually rich and with an effectively consistent aesthetic and mood, the Labyrith is a lighter, more fun fantasy film that, while it takes fewer risks, is still quite enjoyable. Bowie is fun as the Goblin king, Jennifer Connelly is cute but rather banal as the kid on a quest to save her brother, and even while one sometimes has the impression of being in an extended Muppets episode, the simple quest story keeps you interested. It's certainly suitable for kids of any age, doesn't tread into very dark territory, but offers a visually bright and fun story. The song-and-dance numbers are peculiar and never feel quite right (this isn't Bowie's best material by any stretch of the imagination), but it's never terrible, always amusing.
More critically, I can't help but feel that it could have pushed its themes more, rather than staying on the surface. There's a dream sequence where the girl has a (potentially amorous) encounter with the Goblin king at a costume party, but the scene dissolves before it makes any clear suggestions; and the motif of friends helping friends gets to be a little tiresome for its simplicity.
Still, it's a fun fantasy that is the product of the fiercely creative Jim Henson team.Classic elegance - EKKER
This movie is a classic. I still watch it and love the storyline. Granted it lacks good effects but if you understand that this is an older movie then you will get the full effect of it. There are wonderful lessons to be learned throughout this story. You are taken on the journey and live all of the thrilling moments with the well developed characters. I love it!
