The Golden Compass
There are worlds beyond our own. The compass will show the way.
In a parallel world where people each have a personal dæmon, the manifestation of their soul in animal form, young Lyra Belacqua is a precocious orphan growing up at Oxford University. The rambunctious girl enjoys climbing on the roof with Roger the kitchen boy, spitting plum stones on passersby, stealing apples from the market and disrupting tutorials by making animal sounds.
But her carefree existence changes when she and her dæmon prevent an assassination attempt against her uncle, the powerful Lord Asriel, then overhear a secret discussion about a mysterious entity known as Dust. She’s then quickly swept up in a dangerous game involving disappearing children, a beautiful woman with a golden monkey dæmon, a trip to the far north, and a set of allies ranging from witches to an armor-clad polar bear.
Based on the Carnegie Medal-winning novel by Phillip Pullman.

The Golden Compass is a fantasy story centered on Lyra, a young girl who lives in a parallel universe where people exist side by side with their daemons, animals of various ilks who hold your spirit. When Lyra's best friend, Will, is kidnapped by the dark forces of the Magisterium, a veiled version of the Roman Catholic Church, she heads north to the land of the armoured polar bears.Don't understand why it got such dismal reviews... - DMCC
I waited a long time before seeing this, because I too was scared off by the dismal reviews.
In fact, I found the cinematography and sets to be fantastic, the special effects brilliant, the characters (both real and animated) to be likable, and the acting spot on.
It was an enjoyable fantasy tale, and although, yes, perhaps the context is dark, the tale is not depressing...it ends on a hinge, so is a disappointment that Part II is not on its way, so I will settle for the books...
In essence, I wouldn't say it is the movie of the year given the hinge-ending but it was enjoyable for a fan of fantasy tales to watch. The Golden Compass - CrazyCatLady
I'm another one who really liked this movie. I thought the girl who played Lyra was very good. The special effects were excellent and worthy of its Oscar win.
I hadn't read the book(s), but I didn't find it confusing or hard to follow. The ending was a bit abrupt and did leave you hanging, so I guess I'll have to read the books to find out what transpires next. It's definitely worth seeing.
