I'm Not There
Academy Award Nominee: Best Supporting Actress - Cate Blanchett
An unconventional journey into the life and times of Bob Dylan. Six actors (Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Marcus Carl Franklin, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, Ben Whishaw) portray Dylan as a series of shifting personae—from the public to the private to the fantastical—weaving together a rich and colorful portrait of this ever-elusive American icon.

I found this film very interesting and leaving me wanting more. In the extras it states that if you go to the bathroom a miss 5 mins you miss alot, but if you stay you may miss nothing. But at the end of the movie you will say that you will want to watch it again. I think all the actors who portrayed him were good and I can see why Cate Blanchett was nominated. I named my eldest son after him. This movie makes want to transport back in time when Dylan was in his prime.I'm Not There - AppsScraps
Todd Hayes had a great movie in Far From Heaven, and I wanted to say that before reviewing his latest effort, I'm Not There. This film is apparently a biography on the life and times of Bob Dylan and it contains gobs of his music. Piers Handling, Director & CEO of the Toronto International Film Fest Group, gushed at the premier I attended about how it would "revolutionize how biopics are made". Well, if the future of biopics is about dullness, tedious boredom and utter confusion, he truly has hit the nail on the head as this film has this in spades. Utterly forgettable save the performance of Cate Blanchett as one of the Dylan incarnations. And what the hell was Richard Gere doing with his version of Dylan in this mess? A film for strung out artsy-fartsy folk and the film critics who chill with them.
To give Cate her due, my rating 3 out of 10.The Parts Don't Add Up to the Sum - Mookie
Too artsie and too inaccessable for me, is how I would sum up my feelings on this movie. I don't know much about Dylan but I do know more than 75% of the people who would watch this film and I was still lost. I don't mind artsie films who try to tell a story in an original way but they have to work twice as hard to make sure that the message and the thread of the idea comes together. For me the director wanted to film some interesting scenes and had some points he wanted to make in his head and he didn't give a damn if the audience caught up with them.
The biggest shame is that Cate's performance as Jude/Dylan would have made an interesting movie, but parts like Gere/Dylan stopped the movie cold. The premise of the movie is "Bob Dylan was many personalities so let's get different actors and different scenes to express them". Not a bad idea but then you should make the movie linear and have one flow into the other so we can see the evolution.
The simple fact is,some people will love the non-linear nonsensical way this movie unfolds. But for me, even as a mild Dylan fan, I was left wishing for a movie that was less caught up in trying to be clever and more focused on trying to express its points in a clearer fashion. The critics who rave about this film said "After it ended I immediately wanted to watch it again". That might be their ringing endoresement of the film but for me it highlights the fact it was impossible to follow.
