Semi-Pro
Let's Get Sweaty 2-Disc Unrated Edition
Putting the funk into the dunk.
An outrageous comedy set in 1976 against the backdrop of the maverick ABA - a fast-paced, wild and crazy basketball league that rivaled the NBA and made a name for itself with innovations like the three-point shot and slam dunk contest.
Jackie Moon (Will Ferrell), a one-hit wonder who used the profits from the success of his chart-topping song "Love Me Sexy" to achieve his dream of owning a basketball team; but Moon's franchise, the Flint Michigan Tropics, is the worst team in the league and in danger of folding when the ABA announces its plans to merge with the NBA. If they want to survive, Jackie and the Tropics must now do the seemingly impossible - win.

After sitting through this movie, I began to ponder why I did not like it. It had all the Ferrel-isms of movies past. Ron Burgandy, Chad Michael Michaels, Ricky Bobby, etc. all made an appearance. So, why had a classic formula failed so miserably here? And then it hit me. It's because Will Ferrel CANNOT carry a movie on his own. He is a great catalyst for the actions with in a movie, however he cannot be a movie. True, Ron Burgandy was a hilarious character, but what about his news crew? How many lines are quoted from this quartet of idiots? Or Chad Michael Michaels? Will Ferrel needs to remember his strength lies in a strong comedic ensemble. While he has demonstrated some actual acting talent, he still will never be able to carry a film on his own.Pretty Darn Good - Rashan
Yeah, so... I wasn't expecting too much... and there wasn't really. I wasn't amazing, but it did deliver. Pretty good plot, pretty good story over all. It wasn't ground breaking by any means. I'd say, it's a good reflection of Will Ferrell's career, as in consistently good. The guy simply hasn't made a movie that I didn't like, of the many I've seen anyway.A Semi-Pro Movie? - TheShamus
I can't bring myself to completely trash this Will Ferrell basketball vehicle which takes place in the 70's. After all, you have to expect a Ferrell movie to have silly, zany, low-brow laughs.
The movie tells the story of a character played by Will Ferrell who owns a semi-professional basketball team. Ferrell come out with outlandish ploys to keep bums in the seats. Knowledge or interest in basketball is not required for this movie.
I can't recommend this movie. It's never funny enough, the story is is almost devoid of emotion. I'm sure there will be some Farrell fans who will give this a passing grade, but this is far from his best work.
I'd suggest passing this one over unless the movie is on TV and this is the only station you can get.
