Desert Hearts
The all-time favorite lesbian film classic!
It's 1959, and New York English professor Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver, The Color of Money) has come to Reno for a quickie divorce. Staying at a dude ranch, she meets the proprietor's stepdaughter, the sexy casino change-girl Cay Rivvers (Patricia Charbonneau, Kiss the Sky). Despite their differences, sparks fly as free-spirited Cay introduces strait-laced Vivian to the wild-west casino scene and the haunting beauty of the desert. No one is angrier than the dude ranch proprietor (Audra Lindley, Three's Company). And no one is more surprised than the beautiful-but-repressed Vivian when the friendship evolves into unexpected, hot passion.
Desert Hearts pulses with a 50's country western soundtrack featuring Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly, Patti Page, Johnny Ray, Elvis Presley and more.

In addition to lightning fast marriages, the state of Nevada also provides quickie divorces. And so arrives Vivian Bell, a New York city university professor to the divorce ranch, doing the alloted time in the hot, hot sun to establish her residency and thus sever the bonds of matrimony. Vivian is at home in her mind, but less sure of herself in the realm of the senses. Cay---knowing that the chances of her falling in love is going to be extremely remote---chases skirts like there's no tomorrow. There's a nice chemistry between Shaver and Charbonneau. A great film kiss. And a nice little (desensationalized) love story.Truly Awful - Wizard
Someone mentioned this film to me as a very good film about a forbidden love affair. Let me get one thing straight... this is not a good film, nor is it a love affair. Basically it is about an uptight scholar who has an affair with a young free spirited girl. The ONLY thing interesting here is that these are two women. I kept thinking that if this where a man and a woman, it would be a completely absurd and dull film. The acting is forced and the story trudges along. Terrible, don't see it.Not the Best - Purcel
I must say this movie was both boring and made no sense. The acting was great but the writing and premise was just not quite there. The whole film follows a younger lesbian woman chasing after a older straight woman and then it jumps a couple steps and magically they are a couple and in love. there are some other fairly interesting back stories involving the younger woman's friend and her step mom but it seems all the younger woman's focus is on the older woman and how after one meeting she loves her and will soon be with her. I don't recommend this movie it was confusing and slow, I will admit I found myself almost falling asleep quite a bit.
