It does stay in tone with Nolan's Batman to a degree. I'm just not a fan of the Japanese animation style though. So much that it takes me out of the story a little bit. But the story itself is told well, more like short films and anyone a fan of Batman would like what it has to offer.A Solid Knight In - RJDox
Fans of both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight will find much to enjoy with this collection that help bridge the two movies together. The stories told all center on a specific aspect of the Batman character, and the scripts are tightly focused and well thought out.
The animation is often gorgeous to behold, and the different styles used are interesting and mesh well with their individual segments. The action scenes are well done (and often bloody), but I found it was the little character moments that really made the movie stand out. Even with each segment falling in roughly the 10-15 minute range, the stories never seem hurried and actually left me wanting more.
Fans of the two live action films who pay close attention will also spot a number of secondary characters and Easter eggs. This only adds to the enjoyment of the movie, as it helps to further tie the series together. Fans of the Animatrix will certainly appreciate the effort shown here. Though Batman: Gotham Knight doesn’t quite reach the level of that film; it is certainly enjoyable and definitely worth a rental if you’re a fan of the character and the recent films.Worth the Watch - Miker1
The fun part of this collection of animated stories is that the straight to DVD format and the way that Batman Begins and The Dark Knight have elevated the Batman legend to a more adult level allows these stories to push the envelope of what you would normally see on TV. This is no Batman: The Animated Series. These are mature stories with graphically animated violence, which brings a new slant to the world of animated Batman. Most of the animation leans towards the Anime side, which is not my favourite, but still very enjoyable. Watching this had the feel of reading through a bunch of randomly chosen Batman comic books, all with interesting stories to tell. Some of the consistent characters pull the stories together to make this collection a little more cohesive.
