Plot was OK and scenery was good but a movie that was 2.5 hours good is bound to have its dead spots. There must have been some way to cut it down but the martial arts scenes were very well done. I found it hard to find the story very beleivable as I could not see martial arts in the 18th century France. An all-you-can-eat genre buffet! - whitechapel
This film has a lot going for it. The scenery is fantastic and creatively shot to give the countryside a menacing undertone, which fully compliments the numerous colourful characters in the film. The playful flirting between Grégoire (Samuel Le Bihan) and Marianne de Morangias (Emilie Dequenne) is charming enough for me to wish there was a little more of it. You also have the lovely, lovely Monica Bellucci to look at, as well.
Considering the number of well-executed action sequences, it is fair to say that Christophe Gans was heavily influenced by filmmakers such as John Woo and Ronny Yu, having employed an editor on Brotherhood that had previously worked with both. Though the CGI utilized is probably the weakest part of the film, it does not detract from the experience as a whole.
The genre bending can be a little dizzying at times – Is it a period piece? A Kung fu movie? A creature feature? – but I think Gans succeeds, for the most part, with this very ambitious undertaking. The potential was there. - Plastic_Penguin
The love story was rediculous, a man who sleeps with a prostitute every night is supposed to be madly in love with a noblewoman, and the noblewoman accepting this love and returning it though she knows of this. It just doesn't inspire the viewer to root for their romance.
This made the flirting and love scenes a source of frustration as the movie is generously long to begin with. And they had the nerve to end with the suggestion that this was the kind of romance that others would fondly remember.
Even if you don't take his silly romance into account, the main character was still a boring brute, I would have preferred Mani to be the main character, I bet everyone who saw the movie liked him better.
The cast of strange characters were otherwise interesting enough. The plot was also a decent one, it was as complex as it should get in a movie with has elements of a fable in it.
The fight scenes were quite impressive, they were not dry slow sword fights and they were not blurred rushes of fur and steel past the camera either, but actual fast paced action filled battles, which is rare in this genre.
So watch it only if you have a few hours to spare and have aleady seen The 13th Warrior and Conan too many times, but don't watch the dubbed version.
