Nixon (Extended Director's Cut)
Election Year Edition - Extended Director's Cut - 28 Minutes Added
History repeats itself... until we learn.
Anthony Hopkins electrifies the screen as Nixon in the acclaimed hit from controversial director Oliver Stone. Nominated for four Academy Awards, including best actor, Anthony Hopkins, 1995, Nixon takes a riveting look at a complex man whose chance at greatness was ultimately destroyed by his passion for power, when his involvement in conspiracy jeopardized the nation's security and the presidency of the United States. With a phenomenal all-star cast featuring Ed Harris, James Woods and Joan Allen, Nixon is a powerful motion picture.

Interesting, if one-sided biopic. - estefan
Despite the massive length of Oliver Stone's biopic on the life of Richard Nixon, he managed to keep it interesting throughout as he goes through the former president's entire life from his childhood to his death in 1994. Anthony Hopkins does very well in the role, both sounding like Nixon and at times even looking like him. I still prefer Frank Langella's work in Frost/Nixon, but Hopkins does suitably well in the part, too. The other actors also inhabit their roles, though Joan Allen's Academy Award nomination for Supporting Actress confounds me as she didn't leave that big an impact. Despite being over three hours long, Stone keeps it running quite well and though a two-hour cut would have been preferable, I have no complaints about the overall length of the piece. Stone's constant time-jumping does get irritating, though into the second half, he starts ordering the film more chronologically. He also uses some odd filmmaking techniques that distract quite a bit. My main major qualm with Nixon is how Stone presents a rather one-sided portrayal of the man, showing very few, if any, positive qualities in the man, instead portraying him as a lying, drinking, paranoid and altogether horrible human being. I never knew Nixon personally, but there must be some good things about him that Stone must have purposely left out. The most ridiculous scenes that really made me roll my eyes was when Stone implies that Nixon might have been responsible for the deaths of John and Robert Kennedy. Otherwise, Stone does keep our interest through the running time and even if I expect a lot of this to be pure fiction on his part, I will admit that he made a solid film.
