Bottle Rocket (Criterion)
The Criterion Collection
Wes Anderson first illustrated his lovingly detailed, slightly surreal cinematic vision (with cowriter Owen Wilson) in this visually witty and warm portrait of three young misfits. Best friends Anthony (Luke Wilson), Dignan (Owen Wilson), and Bob (Robert Musgrave) stage a wildly complex, mildly successful robbery of a small bookstore, then go "on the lam." During their adventures, Anthony falls in love with a South American housekeeper, Inez (Lumi Cavazos), and they befriend local thief extraordinaire Mr. Henry (James Caan). Bottle Rocket is a charming, hilarious, affectionate look at the folly of dreamers, shot against radiant southwestern backdrops, and the film that put Anderson and the Wilson brothers on the map.

While I liked Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums, I was very disappointed with this movie. I was bored and chuckled perhaps twice. It had a very amateurish feel to it, which is perhaps not surprising, given that this was the first feature from Wes Anderson and the Wilsons. It was if they were trying out what would become their tropes and seeing what stuck. Little of it did. Give it a pass, unless you are a completist for the work of Anderson and the Wilsons.Where it all began - michaelpackard
If you are a late adopter of Wes Anderson films I would highly recommend going back to the beginning of his relationship with the Wilson brothers and check this film out. All the classic visuals, characters and musical arrangements are there is the fun film. It is also great to watch Luke and Owen Wilson before Hollywood stereotyped them. I highly recommend this film.Classic Wes! - KeithTalent
I had not seen this in years, but I picked up the Criterion Blu used a couple of weeks back and finally got around to re-watching it last night. This is Wes Anderson's first film, co-written with Owen Wilson (also his first acting appearance). I had forgotten how enjoyable this film is; some good comedic moments (there could be more) but it has a tonne of heart and is an overall fun little story. Owen Wwilson is pretty damn great here. It's no Rushmore, but if you like Anderson at all (I know there area tonne of haters here, so this is probably not for you) it's definitely worth seeing and is either my 2nd or 3rd favourite of his films.
