Asterix : Astérix aux jeux olympiques
Astérix (Clovis Cornillac) and Obélix (Gérard Depardieu) embark upon new adventures in which they have to win the Olympic Games to enable a young Gaul, Alafolix, to marry the Greek Princess Irina and beat the fearsome Brutus, who is prepared to stoop to anything to win the Olympics and eliminate his father, Julius Caesar.

A French Movie for French people from France - Magali
Being from France originately, I quite enjoyed the movie. It does gather the elements of the comic books we (French kids) all grew up with, it does have the same kind of humor in it, etc. And Benoit Poelvoorde's performance, is, as usual, brilliant.
But I fear some of the spirit of the movie is in reference to what one can call the "French culture". For example one of the funniest elements in this movie is the cast. Casting Alain Delon as Cesar, for example, is hilarious, but this joke is probably lost to whoever doesn't know Alain Delon and the way he is considered by French people. As well, it is doubtful whether the many play-on-words can be adequately translated and have the same connotations in another language or another culture.
Nevertheless, I am confident that anyone with a sense of humor won't regret the two hours they will spend watching this movie with the whole family.Asterix aux Jeux Olympics - BIKO
This is an absolutely great movie! I am 65 and grew up on movies ( rather than tv ) so I have a few "under my belt"- I know a good movie when I see one! At least for my taste, of course. In this case I have to admit-I'm a big fan of Alain Delon - and he was so out of character in this and so absolutely hilarious! Even over 70 he's not only great looking but still vain- I love him! On top of him we Get Gerard Depardieu the Brando of France, in a fat costume he has come to hardly need! He's fabulous!
The entire production is so obviously expensive, so
beautifully crafted- all from a comic book! I watched it first w/out subtitles even though i speak no French- just to SEE it- I laughed out loud several times. The sub-titles on second view added to some understanding but not to appreciation- this is ia fun movie for everyone, almost innocent if you can believe it in these times...Weak, but fun - zaakistan
Well-loved French comic book heroes Astérix and Obélix return to the big screen in an epic tale of the little guy winning against the tyrant.
Traveling from Gaul, the only remaining non-Roman province in Europe, Asterix and his spherical sidekick attend the olympics in Athens to support their friend who has fallen in love with a Greek princess. Here they must thwart the illegal efforts of the Emperor's son who also has an eye for the princess.
The entire thing is simply farce with very little tongue in cheek commentary on politics, which is too bad, because the comics did have their fair share of satire. The effects are acceptable, but the entire story is weak and random.
