Tropic Thunder
Director's Cut
Get Some
Pampered action superstar Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller) is cast in the biggest, most expensive war movie ever produced. He sets out to Southeast Asia with a "Who's Who" of celebrity co-stars. They include Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.), an intense, three-time Oscar-winning actor; Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), star of the popular gross-out comedy franchise "The Fatties"; multi-platinum hip-hop-star-turned-entrepreneur-turned-actor Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson); and first-timer Kevin Sandusky (Jay Baruchel).
Soon after the production begins the actors are thrown into a real-life situation and are forced to become the fighting unit they're portraying, in order to find a way out of the jungle in one piece.

This is a great parody of Vietnam war films (of which I must say I've seen a lot) combined with a perhaps too obvious satire of the blockbuster production factory. Most of the jokes work (and one of the best parts is that there is a ton of them so I suspect it would hold up over time) and unlike so many parodies of the ZAZ-influenced school, these jokes are often rooted in situation and character, instead of just slapstick. What a comedy! - mxg123
This movie is supposed to be a big comedy, but was it? I was able to watch most of it, but for some people it may be a complete bore, and possibly makes other sleep. So it is not for everyone, and should only be watched as a light comedy with a few funny looking/acting characters in strange locations.does no one appreciate satire anymore? - Alexandra
"Tropic Thunder" is Ben Stiller's satirical take on the film industry, and it certainly had me laughing out loud, very hard, several times. The absolute best part of the film for me was Tom Cruise who reprises his excellent role in "Magnolia" but takes it a little further, a little fatter and crazier, as a movie mogul. He plays character parts so well I am stunned he doesn't play them more often.
The take offs of method acting (in particular the knock at Russell Crowe) really had me in hysterics, as did the take on "Apocalypse Now" and all the other Vietnam war famous flicks (the most obvious references to "Platoon" were less amusing, but still funny). And until this film I really had little appreciation for the physical humour of Jack Black. Robert Downey Jr. is always a treat. In this, the risk of the characterisation alone is worth the watching of the film.
Thank goodness for the irreverence of Ben Stiller.
