Firstly I must say that this movie is not like as I expected. I was expecting a movie that contains more action and horror scenes but this one was like a documentary. The movie is so long, I think this is unnecessary.
There is no problem with the acting, it was good enough. If I am going to talk about colors and places of the movie, I will say it was not that good. Colors of the movie was so classic style, it was not shiny. Places were not that much, film was going on mostly at indoor (offices, houses).
Lastly this is not a bad movie but you must be patience to watch it. Also if you like detective, crime or serial killer movies, there are a bunch of good and interesting one around. The NeverEnding Story - Stitch
No, it’s not the 1984 fantasy world of Wolfgang Petersen. But at times one ponders a connection because this real-world docudrama at times feels interminable. And in one sense it really is because the case that so beguiled the ‘cartoonist’ has never been officially closed. And justice never rendered, unless a fatal heart attack counts as righteous retribution. The Zodiac killer, like Jack the Ripper, has not to this day been definitively fingered.
The screenplay is creatively spun around three main players (cop, reporter, cartoonist); it impressed this viewer with its preoccupation with accuracy. Consequently, the plot line is fractured and complex. And if you tend to be frustrated with bureaucratic details and counter-productive turf wars, you may tire. On the other hand, if you’ve suffered and survived ‘the system’, it’s very much worth the watch to appreciate what individual dedication can achieve. Or, more accurately, fanatic dedication.
Jake Gyllenhaal is superb. His character breathes authenticity as he slowly gets sucked into a mystery that eventually devours him. Great choice for the role, possibly his most apt. Mark Ruffalo (often underrated in my opinion) is equally believable as the dogged detective. His eventual disengagement and surrender to the hopelessness of an inconclusive investigation is especially realistic. Which I could not say for Robert Downey’s performance which to me appears curiously trite. A little too much affectation, methinks, to dress up a character who really was inconsequential.
Having lived in the Bay Area in the early ‘70s, I will admit the cinematography doesn’t convey a great sense of place. But the locale is incidental to the story. Besides, this becomes a pretty mundane horror story after the media moves on. Only the viewer dedicated to the reality of police work will suffer through, if only to appreciate a brief brilliant interrogation segment. As major suspect, John Carroll Lynch rocks.Diddy did it - SadDadDancing
