The Last Metro (Le dernier métro) [Criterion]
The Criterion Collection
Gérard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve star as members of a French theater company living under the German occupation during World War II in François Truffaut’s gripping, humanist character study. Against all odds—a Jewish theater manager in hiding; a leading man who’s in the Resistance; increasingly restrictive Nazi oversight—the troupe believes the show must go on. Equal parts romance, historical tragedy, and even comedy, The Last Metro (Le dernier métro) is Truffaut’s ultimate tribute to art overcoming adversity.

They don't make actresses like Catherine Deneuve any more. Come to think of it, neither do I.
In The Last Metro/Le dernier métro, Gérard are simply superb as members of a French theatrical troupe trying to perform and survive in Nazi-occupied Paris towards the end of the war. The Gestapo is becoming increasingly oppressive and residents of the city are increasingly desperate.
Against this backdrop, Francois Truffaut paints a brilliant portrait of man's need to not just live but thrive regardless of the obstacles.
Two notes: All of the bonus material - of which there is quite a bit - is on a second disc which must be Zipped seperately when ordering the film. And the subtitles are a bit clumsy in that the translations are more inexact than usual in a foreign language film.
