Cranford
An all-star cast including Judi Dench, Michael Gambon, Eileen Atkins, Imelda Staunton and more come together in this BBC/Masterpiece Classic drama adapted from the works of Elizabeth Gaskell.
1842. Cranford, a market town in the North West of England, is a place governed by etiquette, custom and above all, an intricate network of ladies. For spinsters Deborah Jenkyns (Atkins), the arbiter of correctness in Cranford, and her demurring sister Matty (Dench), the town is a hub of intrigue where little goes unnoticed. Everyone - from charming rogue Dr. Marshland to Mrs. Jamieson and her lap dog - talks, and is talked about.

Lovely period piece - feliper
This is a superb made-for-tv adaptation of stories of a small town in England at the time of the coming of the railroad. Aside from the town, the main characters are the women who inhabit and shape the town. All strata of society, from poachers to the local aristocracy, are represented but the centre are the genteel ladies of independent means. There is humour and pathos, great drama covering a time of change. If I had a complaint it would be that there isn't enough of Eileen Atkins in the series.Cranford - Jude
This was a very nice mini series. The acting is excellent. The story is delightful, all the "goings-ons" in the village. Such a different time, everyone so stilted. You are engulfed in the movie, each episode a story on its own. Don't miss this one.Delightful mini-series - avidfilmbuff
The BBC excels once again. Although there are only five episodes, it seems much longer. Each episode is about one hour long and the plot is so rich that every episode seems like a full-length film. There is an abundance of great acting talent: Judi Dench, Julia Sawalha, Michael Gambon, Claudi Blakley, Simon Woods. The visual warmth of the cinematography and the beautifully crafted script are a delight. Emotion is delivered with depth yet restraint. Highly recommended.
