True Blood: Season 1 (Blu-ray)
Vampires have come "out of the coffin" and are now living among us. Surviving on synthetic blood, they no longer need human blood to survive. Or so it seems...
The small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana boasts a wide array of colorful locals. Meet Sookie Stackhouse (Academy Award winner Anna Paquin), a sweet and innocent waitress who hides her powerful ability to read minds; Bill Compton, a 173-year-old vampire who's just moved back to town; Sookie's brother Jason, a ladies' man who can't seem to stay out of trouble; tough-as-nails Tara, Sookie's loyal best friend; Sam, the owner of Merlotte's who tries to keep his feelings for Sookie to himself; Lafayette, a man about town who's always cooking up something illicit and "off the menu" and a quirky cast of characters who each hide their dark secrets in the shadows of night in this series that's like no other.
From Alan Ball, writer of the Oscar-winning Best Picture American Beauty and creator of the Emmy Award-winning HBO series Six Feet Under, comes the critically acclaimed world of True Blood.

good but different - Pumon
Being a fan of the books, a huge fan actually, I was VERY reluctant to see the show. Often movies do a great job of ruining the books for me. But I gave this a chance. It was different. Definitly not the same as the books but the storyline seemed to function on its own accord. Chracters took on new storylines and really it was quite goodFresh enough to keep even Sookie Stackhouse readers on their toes - whitenoise
Granted, most television adaptations feel the need to or have to stray from their original material (the same can be said of films). Often, the added material feels tacked on, awkward, even bad. In the case of True Blood, not only are the settings, environments and mood of the books greatly translated to the screen, but the additions are actually welcome. The dialogue is witty, in spirit with Charlaine Harris' style, and the fleshing out of the characters piques one's interest in the plotlines rather than detract from the show. Delivering an ensemble cast in Sookie's world is a very different take from the books, and keeps the readers from becoming jaded by predicting twists ahead of time.
As nothing is perfect in this world, it has its cringe moments, but these are quickly forgotten as one gets drawn into the supernatural world of Sookie and just hungers for the next installment.
Carnivale it ain't, but far behind it ain't, either. Not perfect (it is getting there) but definitely a joy to watch. - Sam-
after reading a few mocking reviews, it took me two years to start in on True Blood. i finally dove in and, although it is not perfect, it has shown itself to be a worthwhile series to follow for us! :) the tone was a bit tough to grasp at first (and i believe, as with every series, for the creators as well -- the first couple of episodes are shaky at best, trying to reach for the right tone). after a few episodes, things settle in quite nicely, though, and we couldn't watch them quickly enough. great job all around. production values, tone, twists, music... and the actors are spectacular (Rutina Wesley, Ryan Kwanten, and Nelsan Ellis were my favourite standouts).
can't wait to settle into season two.
